During the American invasion of Afghanistan an American soldier came upon an old Afghani who was planting a young sapling in the midst of an otherwise desolate and war torn landscape. The soldier asked the old man why he was planting the tree, and the old man told him it was for shade. The soldier laughed and said, "Old man, you'll be long dead before that tree ever gives any shade." The old man looked at him and said, "Oh no, this tree is not for me, it is for my children and my grandchildren."

Like that old man's tree, what grows from the information in this area is not necessarily for me, and perhaps not even for you. It's for our children and our grandchildren.

The word "nature" on this website refers to the natural processes at work in the world around us, not to the personification of some omniscent self-aware entity.

NATURE SECTION NEWS AND UPDATES
Last Update: March 29, 2004

What this section is all about

In doing research for my writing and small efforts at trying to understand nature and our relationship with it I come across an enormous amount of potentially useful information. Some of it is publicly available on internet websites, which may or may not be easy to find. Some of it comes from interviews, private correspondence, and other offline sources. This section is the repository for much of that information.

In the fall of 2001 I began a three-year natural farming project using the ideas of Masanobu Fukuoka as set forth in his books:

"One-Straw Revolution"
"The Natural Way of Farming"
and "The Road Back to Nature".

The recent changes in my life have taken me away from the land I was using for that project, and so that project is ended, but not my interest in developing sustainable agriculture. I will continue to maintain The Fukuoka Farming Website, and to research and post information about sustainable agriculture and the wild things of "nature" in this section.

EXPLANATION OF NAVIGATION BAR LINKS

AGRICULTURE: Information about the conditions and factors that are driving the development of local, truly sustainable agriculture. Also includes information about the work and techniques of Masanobu Fukuoka (author of "One Straw Revolution" and other natural farming related books).

WILD THINGS: Information and considerations about the wild side of the natural world, its inhabitants, and our relationship to and with it.

ARTICLES AND IMAGES: Published and unpublished articles and images related to the natural world, both domesticated and wild.

RESOURCES: There are many internet websites related to nature and the natural world. This page contains a selection of links I have found to be most useful in my work and in broadening/deepening my understanding of the natural world and our relationship to it.

FOR EDITORS: Since I work as a freelance writer, photographer, and videographer, this page provides information on how to contact me if you are interested in having me work for you.

If you have not already visited the Fukuoka Farming Website and read at least the Introduction and Overview sections, you have missed reading some of the most informative material on natural farming available on the internet. The interviews with Masanobu Fukuoka posted in the Articles section of that website should also be "must read" documents.
